We learned that when we were already in college or were about to start working. Parents and friends might even have mentioned the dos and do-nots if we were to be seen as well-carried executives in the workplace. Most frequently, we talk about how we should dress. At the minimum, even if a fresh graduate may not afford a tailor-made suit, he could at least put on clean pants and shirt. The main principle in etiquette that I learned when I started to work is to be clean and tidy.
Now I should think that putting on perfume should be conducted with the same etiquette. It is pleasant to the others to be in their presence smelling neutral or good. Just like the principle of “clean and tidy”, it applies with one’s odour. Your presence with other people reflects your manners and that is visible through sight, sound and smell.
Wearing strong perfume in the workplace is really not pleasant for other people. I think people should not think that just because they personally like the smell of a particular perfume, the people around them would like it. I think it is bad manners to put so much perfume that people could smell you from 20 meters.
I have been suffering from such situation in my workplace. Every time the person walks within 20 meters diameter from where I am, I could smell the perfume. Someone told me that it’s Opium. The worst part is that once the odour hits my senses, I begin to feel nausea and sometimes I feel like vomiting at that instance.
